Papakōlea Green Sand Beach

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach

South Point / Kaʻū
FREEOutdoorOlder kids and teens — strong walkers
Local Tip

One of only a handful of green sand beaches in the world — the color comes from olivine volcanic crystals. To get there: 2.5-mile hike each way, completely exposed with no shade and strong winds. Bring serious amounts of water and sun protection. Local trucks offer unofficial shuttle rides (~$25/person) — note these are not officially sanctioned and have caused erosion to the landscape. Rental cars are not permitted on the access road. No swimming — strong currents. Best for older kids and teens who can handle the hike. About 1.5 hours from Kona, 2.5 from Hilo — dedicated trip from either side.

Daily — daylight hours. Go early morning before heat and wind build.
