Great rainy-day homeschool stop — Hawaiian culture and geology exhibits. Note: Mission House stairs are very steep with no elevator — wheelchair users can only access the main museum building. Strollers not allowed in galleries. Reservations recommended.
Free NOAA museum dedicated to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument — one of the largest marine protected areas on Earth. Features a large saltwater aquarium, interactive exhibits on coral reefs, Hawaiian culture, and ocean science, plus live performances and a theater. Right on Kamehameha Avenue in downtown Hilo. Tuesday through Saturday only — closed Sunday and Monday.
Powerful and moving exhibit on the tsunamis that devastated Hilo. May be intense for sensitive younger kids — prepare them beforehand. Currently weekends only during renovation — go early since the window is short. Great add-on to a downtown Saturday.
Community museum on lava flows, eruptions, and Puna history — including the 2018 eruption that reshaped the area. Exhibits on lava flows, artifacts, and videos. Great rainy-day stop when in the Pāhoa area.
