Lava rock shoreline with a hidden sheltered swimming hole — walk to the far east end of the park to find it. Freshwater springs bubble up from the ocean here, making the water noticeably cooler. Water shoes recommended. No lifeguard on duty.

Great tidepools — supervise kids closely on the rocks. Not recommended in high surf. Plan bathroom stops elsewhere.

Most family-friendly ocean spot on the Hilo side — shallow sandy protected pools perfect for little ones. Lifeguards on duty year-round. Check water quality advisories before visiting.

This black sand beach was born from the 2018 Kīlauea eruption — lava poured into the ocean right here. Donʻt miss the natural warm spring pools near the boat ramp, heated by geothermal activity. Great for picnics and watching fishing boats. Bathing suits required in the hot ponds.

Black sand, tidepools, and turtles — great snorkel spot. Lifeguard on duty. Can be crowded on weekends so go early. Showers and restrooms on site.
